High blood sugar is a disorder that is often easy to ignore unlike other diseases and body issues like a bladder infection, because bladder infections often show pain to your body in a very physical way, while we can just go along with life living with high blood sugar issues like nothing is wrong. The affects can cause plaque buildup in arteries and can effect the patient from everything from blindness to even death. There are nearly 24 million Americans diagnosed with diabetes and nearly 57 million people that are prediabetic, either they do not know they have it, or do nothing to help it. The CDC is estimating that 1 in 3 Americans will have diabetes by 2050. Being overweight is one of the biggest factors that can increase the risk of getting type 2 diabetes, which is most common. People every day are walking around living their daily lives with high blood sugar levels, but have no symptoms so they have no reason to lower them. We learned that lifestyle diseases are one thing that can make a change in the death rate, and that effects the stage of growth of a nation. The United States are currently around stage 4 or 5 of the demographic transition model, this is because we could be thought of as being in the declining because lifestyle diseases are becoming more common. We have to figure out ways to target this problem so that it does not get worse as the years go on.

Cholera Strikes United States Soil

As in several of my past blogs, I have talked about how many infectious diseases have been spreading not only in the United States, but in the other parts of the world also. This week though an epidemic that has been causing riots and fear in the country of Haiti has not reached to the United States, to the shores of Florida. State officials have told about how a women who had been visiting her family in the caribbean country, and she has now developed signs of cholera since returning to the states. This disease has been causing major problems in Haiti, including killing more than 1,000 in recent months, and hospitializing thousands more. Even though the problem is spreading so rapidly in Haiti, they do not expect the single case in Florida to spread. Health officials dont anticipate the cases to spread in the United States because our water and sanitation systems really cut down on the risk to people. A similar outbreakof cholera broke out in Latin America during the 1990s with some cases occuring in Florida but the cases were only limited to about 20. But on the other hand, in 1910 when there was an outbreak in New York City the disease killed eleven people. This disease is one that is killing thousands anually and effects millions each year in less developed countries. Is this disease one that we should be more concerned with right now, until waiting for the problem to get worse? Health problems in the United States are something that could cause more problems than if it was caught at the beginning.

Parkinson's New Arises

Parkinson's disease is a disease that has left many people stunned because of the countless numbers of questions that have yet to be answered about the disease. The cause of Parkinson's is still unknown. Although now there is proof from a recent report that says pollutants [in urban areas] may increase the risk of getting the disease in the future. Manganese and Copper pollution has been one of the types of pollutants that are said to maybe have an effect on city dwellers. The Washington University in St. Louis reports that people living in areas with higher levels of manganese pollution could have a 78 percent greater risk of having Parkinson's disease than those in areas of low pollution. Unlike in urban areas, research in rural areas show links from private well water and pesticides to higher risk to the disease. The Los Angeles Times' Greenspace blog stated lastyear, "Rural residents who drink from private well water are up to twice as likely to develop Parkinson's from a certain pesticide, including methomyl, chlorpyrifos and propargite, a UCLA study has found...". From a social aspect you can tell from this how pollution is something that is becoming a social problem because this small issue is now turning into a problem that may be cause people to contract a deadly disease. We seem to do be doing anything though to be solving this problem as Americans because everyday people are still dying from this disease. I think that this problem is coming from many places, but mostly because of the corporations that have factories causing pollution rates to rise and that is part of the problem. We have to do something to cut back on urban pollution that is causing this disease some may think. Also, with the rural population we need to be able to educate the people about safe ways of having well water to drink to potentially cut down on how much impact it is having on causing the disease.

Dental Health Problems Rising

Along with the problems with the economy, we have found many other problems arising. One of the more long term effects that we have been seeing is more problems with dental health. While the economy is making people more financially crunched, dental care is the first thing to go tells Ron Tankersley, the past president of the American Dental Association. While employees are not getting any increases of pay in the work force, they are also seeing their health benefits decreasing. this is causing people to not go to the dentist for routine check-ups. Dental health problems are not just problems that will fix or cure themselves on their own, they will only get worse overtime. Instead of waiting to get small problems such as cavities filled, you will not have to spend more money in the future when the issue gets worse. Tankersley said, "...before antibiotics, facial infections were the leading cause of death in young people". Issues with teeth only get worse overtime and cause more health problems in the long run. "Oral health literacy is one of the worst health problems, but it doesn't need to be," Tankersley says. There is clearly is a problem going on in the world right now in the terms of money and the economy, this is making health problems rise over time more and more, this causing a social problem, clearly. People should be able to be getting affordable health insurance, including dental insurance today. What do we need to do to fix the problem?

Disease Is Spreading

149 countries and territories and hurting the lives of at least on billion people, that is the basis of the problems of infectious disease in poor population. The United Nations health agency released a report on October 14, 2010 stating that they had ways to combat a group of chronic infectious diseases. This report covers 17 tropical diseases that thrive in more areas that are very poor with housing that is substandard with living surroundings that are contaminated and have insects and animals spreading disease. Many international pharmaceutical companies are giving generous donations to the areas and people in need. Companies such as Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline are renewing their commitments to continue to help the areas. Consequences of the untreated of diseases are great, including; blindness, severe pain, limb deformities, impaired mental and physical development, and damage to internal organs. Some of the diseases that are being looked into are; Buruli ulcer disease, lymphatic filariasis, and leprosy. This problem is one that people around the world are working to control that is because these diseases are ones that are considered to be a global problem. I feel this because people in the United States even, are working to control this endemic. The drug companies are part of the leaders in making this global change by supplying the countries with the basic drug needs of the people in distress. If this was not a global problem there would not be people working hard to try and come up with solutions including the UN, and other countries internationally. We are working to solve the problem that is happening in those remote areas right now, and that is what we need to continue to try and wipe out the diseases being spread.

Rabies Strikes
Rabies, something that we do not think about everyday in the United States, but something that is causing problems in Bali, Indonesia. Dogs were attacking and biting the residents of the island, and alot of these animals being loved-pets of residents of the island. There have been at least 78 people killed in the country due to rabies. This has caused for the US and Australia to take percautions when it comes to traveling. The epidemic has been sought to be more of a problem now since they are reporting shortages of the much needed vacines, this causing problems. Bali is not the only areo of the world experiencing these problems, though. Asia has more than the 80% of the 55,000 deaths in the world reported deaths. This is causing panic in the world, epidemics cause social problems in the world, people are blaming the governments for not following through with proceedures effectively. Not just in the United States, but also throughout the world. When thinking about this problem on a global level we have to see what all the areas are doing to make this problem decrease, and make the same efforts throughout the world to cut down on the deaths. Rabies is not an epidemic in the United States, and maybe modeling what we do to the rest of the world, is nessicary. There is no one to blame, but rather everyone needs to work together to try and solve the problem.

Food Issues Arising

The commonly known juice drink, POM, is now being sued for having false and unsubstantiated advertisements. The company was sued by the Federal Trade Comission. Although this company is not the first to be in trouble from the government because of unsupported health claims that came along with the advertisment. POM advertises its pomegranate juice and POMx supplements, and says that the juice has 'super health powers' that are capable of treating or preventing prostate cancer and other conditions. This is a problem because it is false leading the people to think that this juice will give you superior health. This company also was advertising these statements that were not approved by the FDA. Food industries often do say things about health in their advertising and they try to portray how the food will be something 'important' to make sure your health is perfect. Heath issues often cause social problems to arise because is something is said to be 'true', then if something is found to be false with the problem then they are upset with the problem and a social issue arises.

Disease and Food Insecurities Hit Pakistan Post Flood

Pakistan since July has been being hit with floods, and from this these floods are causing major problems to the people on the land. Some of the problems include disease from several sources including contaminated water, and they are also having food insecurities since crop has been destroyed in large amounts. Some of the other major social problems that are occurring in Pakistan right now also include; malnourishment, disruption of health care, and food insecurity being the top problem at this time. UN agencies are working had to help resolve this problem for the over 4.5 million people that are being affected from the post flood conditions. Over a 1,000 tons have been sent to be given to the people that need the medicine. The UN and partners are now working to set up disaster relief for natural disasters like this one, they are trying to reduce avoidable death and illness for everyone in Pakistan. What the UN and other agencies are doing post this disaster are very good, they are now trying to build up a system to help to prevent a global problem like this to happen again, although they cannot stop the natural disaster they can help to support the systems such as the medical system. They are working towards helping to reduce the social problems in the region such as widespread illness and malnutrition. The UN and other organizations are really working towards fixing this problem and are working towards prevention also, which is something that is completely necessary.

Aim for Global Health Resolutions Continue
Kelsey Layton

There are many global health issues that are being addressed today, and even more issues are being added to the list to this day. Hiliary Clinton has just recently announced a $63 billion global health initiative and wants to focus on maternal and child care, these are types of things to aim at fighting dieases such as; malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. Although we have worked on fighting diseases such as polio and respiratory disease, they want to aim at issues that are more fit to the budget. Also they want to be able to ensure health care for women and girls. Terry Miller, and economist at the Heritage Foundation, stated that we right now are focusing on infectious disease, but when we should shift to also concerning ourselves with non-infectious disease also. Miller said, "I would like to have seen a little more emphasis on improving outsomces for a society as a whole in an equitable way across all genders. Many people in the health field are calling for a broader balance in the health system of public health. In this article i think that it really does make sense. We as a society do need to think about all the health issues that are being looked into with out money, and we need to learn to balance they money between them. In this article the the quote said by Miller stated that we wanted to see improvement for the outcomes for society as a whole. This is true, we need to start by trying to improve the big "issues" for the people in the society and not waste our money on problems that are not 'big'.

Childhood Obesity, Still a Struggle Daily
Kelsey Layton

Childhood obesity is a problem in the United States and is something that is now trying to be controlled more strictly. Two major research programs have been launched with the National Institutes of Health in the US. Susan B. Shurin, director of the US National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute stated, "Childhood is the optimal time to encourage healthy habits that kids can practice for the rest of their lives". This statement is something that they have been considering greatly. Why wait until the problem has progressed to a point that is too late to help to the fullest potential? $72.5 million are being spent across the nation to work on this problem; they will be examining the effectiveness of home, and school treatments for overweight children. A second program will be spending $23 million to work on community based efforts. Many places to this day have been trying to curve this problem by encouraging working out and fitness and healthy eating but this is still a problem. This issue is something that is very real, and you see it happening everyday in the community, but you have to think where is the base of the problem? Having experience seeing the action being put into full swing in schools switching to serving, "healthy food" to putting wii's into highschool gym classes. You have to think about what is making these children turn to food in their lives, and this makes childhood obesity a social problem i feel. The media everyday on channels that are aimed to children shows that the unhealthy options are the better options, making kids feel that, that is the right option. The institutes need to not only work on getting them in physically better shape, but also to lend emotional help and to make sure that they find out the reason behind this problem that arose in childhood.

Problems in the US with children's vaccines
Kelsey Layton

September 16, 2010
Childrens vaccines are something that the United States to some extent "relies" on. New versions of classic engineering techniques have made it possible to make more informed decisions about building and using supplies to make more childrens vaccines and eventually this could make the costs go down, and along with that we would have healthy children. The United States keeps a 6- month supply of common vaccines, and this has many advantages as well as disadvantages. When the vaccines are used or expired, they have to restock and this is a very labor filled process, and also since they have to place orders up to a year in advance it has its disadvantages of being unreliable. Researches at such Universities such as The University of Illinios at Urbana-Champaign have been developing ways to better understand the implications of vaccine stockpiles. Ordering vaccines year after year is not something that is easy to do, having to think about the impact of shortages, minimizing cost and more. Also how important the vaccine makes a huge difference. The whole issue surrounding childrens's vaccine is something that in no way is easy to resolve and work through without considering all the different aspects.
When looking at this issue from the point of view of the healthcare officials dealing with this, you have to think about what they have to consider when thinking about how to go about putting orders in and how many to get. On the other end of the spectrum you have to think about the families and how they want to get vaccines for their children at costs that should be cheap... and they should always be available when needed. The healthcare industry over the years has changed greatly in all aspects, and this has made it possible for the health of the people to in turn increase. This though has been made possible though, by vaccines being available at early younth ages to be able to make our immune systems able to fight certain deadly diseases in the future. Although the struggles now in the United states about vaccines and how they need to be regulated and such is more of a "problem" it is not something that we should let hurt our youth, and they should still be able to have the resources available.

Whooping cough causing greater problems on Peninsula

An outrageous epidemic of the Whooping cause has struck Santa Clara, and San Mateo recently. It is said that this has been the worse bout of it in centuries, and because of the officials are making more efforts to help. The whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a respiratory tract infection that causes spells of severe coughs. Schools are sending out packets to families, and the public health departments are even now hosting free vaccinations in the area. The epidemic is hitting the area hard in all aspects. The amount of cases are reaching exceeding numbers. As of August 30, 2010, the state has reported almost 3,600 cases of the whooping cough. The amount has almost increased by 7 since the 501 cases reported at the same time last year. All ages are getting hit with the whooping cough, most though of a young age. Eight infants under the age of 3 months have died in CA this year, 132 18 and younger aged children have been reported since August 31st, 13 of them being hospitalized that were younger than 6 months. This is a problem because it is easy to diagnosis in adults but not so much in children, especially young children because it is hard to recognize symptoms. Children are suppose to recieve the first 5 DTap vaccinations prior to kindergarden to help against this problem. The state is taking major issues to help control this epidemic at the time.
In this article, while reading i could not help but to think about the 'epidemic' the the united states had just gone through over the past year, this being the swine flu. I think that the 2 problems have similar stories. Something that made me really debate was about how the children are the most common to have this disease and that they are the group hardest to diagnose because you cant tell if they are sick. For example you are sending you child to a day care with a young child that doesnt know how to adequetely tell you that they are sick. Then that caused that child to spread the illness to other children too. I think that there needed to be a new vaccination to help prevent against this, if this illness is an ongoing problem or something to those means. Do we really want children spreading a illness like this, and getting horribly ill?

Agent Orange Problems Arise

There has been problems recently arising that are connecting agent orange, a dioxin-laden defoliant that was sprayed into the jungles, to vietnam veterans. There are now more than a quarter of a million vets recieving disability checks because of this, and also they are being compensated for diabetes. There are other conditions though, that are also recieving money due to the agent orange, and are being taking care of whether the cause was direct, or indirect. Diseases such as Parkinson's Disease, heart disease and leukemia are also being added to the list that the tax payers will have to take care of- along with other. Is this something that is fair? Past Senator Alan Simpson stated, " The irony [is] that the veterans that saved this country are now, in a way, not helping us to save this country in this fiscal mess". This passageway of spending seems to be a complete contridiction of what we are trying to control with spending as a whole. Simpson has a strong opinion on this but would not say whether he will try to take this to Obama's panel but instead to leave it to congress to take care of. Although they need to make sure that the cost is always taken into consideration, at the same time the vets need to also be considered. It is said that about $850 million dollars should be, and are going to vietnam vets every year, and in total to all wars the agency spends $34 billion dollars.
This article is something that made me think alot about the amount of money we spend of such critical needs, such as healthcare for vets. When former senator Simpson stated about how the vietnam veterans did help out our country to endless amounts, but are now contributing to the problem with the economy it really made me think. In no way should these heros for our country now be having to struggle for money for disabilties themselves, but the amount of money is slightly absurd. If we are struggling with money in so many ways with the nation during this time, how do you think that we should try and solve the problem?
