Since reporting about the war in Congo, I have learned about the numbers of deaths that are constantly rising. I thought that the outrageous numbers occurred only when Congo went through the genocide about a decade ago due to the ethnic hatred but I had no idea that there is a estimated 45,000 people that die every month. Can you imagine that all the people that you make contact with or ever known, dies and you can not do anything to prevent it from happening?
This is exactly how the people of Congo feels even after the war that happened 5 years ago. Since the war, it is said that over 5.4 million people have died with only less than half of them were caused by violence. What is shocking to most is that “more than half of the dead were children younger than 5 years old.” It is stated that “the survey was based on a sample of 14,000 households in 700 villages” but what confuses me is that they are concerned with the continuous death rate but while they are over there they need to find the foundation to the problem and then we can work on a solution.
Even though the US is slowly helping the survivors in Congo, I still feel that something else can be done to stop the inclining death rate. Innocent people are being killed over something that can be prevented. They hate each other all because of their difference in the outer appearance. If my memory serves me correctly we US citizens went through the same thing but it is something to think about if we were in the Congo citizens shoes. I could not imagine everyone dieing and nothing being done about it. Hopefully a breakthrough comes soon for the Congo citizens.
