Economic Inequality Plagues Kenya

Kristen Smith, Wednesday January 23 2008, 12:43 pm, Poverty and Inequality

Amidst the political struggles that are going on presently in Kenya, another problem that has always been an issue is gaining more attention. Kenyans that have jobs or own stores are being terrorized by those who do not. People who have been successful in their work of picking tea leaves or owning their own small shops are being looted and their shops set fire to. The inequality that exists - the fact that millions are jobless is the main force behind the political riots and issues. These people want a leader who will help the poverty problem, and Kibaki, their current president, is said to have "stolen" the vote by rigging the system. They do not believe he will help. The worst violence has been seen at the "tea estates" where numerous "tea leaf pickers" were slaughtered by the mob of protesters. The protesters don't think it's fair that the people who have jobs continue to have them, while they are left poor(er) and unemployed.

I think this situation is really sad. It's sad, first of all, because the government and economy can't create enough jobs for it's people, and it's also sad that those who are unemployed feel the need to take from those who are. I understand that they feel it is unjust, however, the people who have jobs didn't directly "steal" them from those who do not. It's unfair to blame innocent people for something the government or leader could help with.

Innocent people, sadly, really do become the scapegoats for the government, when it suits them best. There should be much better attempts at creating some semblance of equality in Kenya's struggling economy.

The jobless people probably aren't attacking those with businesses out of a political sense of unfairness. They probably just need the money they have and the stuff. If I am sitting at home listening to my children crying because they are hungry, the right or wrong of stealing pales beside the wrong of letting my own child starve to death.
