Rice Presses Musharraf on Elections

Erin Clark, January 24, 2008, 11:55 PM, Current Event Two

If Pervez Musharraf, the current leader of Pakistani wants to keep the billions of dollars of funding from the US, he must ensure that next months elections are completely fair and free. Condoleezza Rice strongly suggested this as well as President Musharraf taking part in boosting counterterrorism, or deflecting possible terrorism, along with the United States and Afghanistan.
During the same meeting, Afghan President Hamid Karzai warned the audience of a “wildfire spread of terrorism” in Afghanistan as well as Pakistan. This is frightening, as this terrorism could very possibly and easily spread to other parts of the world, particularly Europe and the United States.
NATO, which neither Afghanistan nor Pakistan are a member of, are trying their best to help out in Afghanistan. NATO is not in the business of combat, rather peace-keeping, hence the T standing for treaty in the group’s name. Citizens of America are somewhat concerned about NATOs efforts in Afghanistan, as they feel not much is being accomplished. Condoleezza Rice stated in her speech that “We are engaged in a real war in Afghanistan” and NATO is doing a great deal of good, even with the incredibly high stakes. It seems that al-Qaida and the Taliban fighters are attempting to break into Pakistan, seemingly without a problem, because they are sensing the insecurity within the borders. The United States wants to go into Pakistan and help prepare them for possible terrorist attacks, but will not do so until the ok is given from Pervez Musharraf and his government. I just hope that the Pakistani government does not wait until it is too late.
