Pope revives science-versus-religion debate

Ashley Flaherty/Feb. 1,2008, 12:24pm/Religious conflict

On Monday, Pope Benedict stated that science has strong seductive powers that ruins a man's spirituality. The pope re-hatched the debate on science-versus-religion and in turn had to cancel his speech at a university. He told scientists that " In an age when scientific developments attract and seduce witht he possibilites they offer, it's more important than ever to educate our contemporaries' consciences so that science does not become a criteria for goodness." The pope reiterated a plea which has been made in many of his speeches, for mankind to be "respected as the centre of creation" and not relgated by more short-term interests. Though the pope's stand on abortion and embryotic-stem cell research leads critics to accuse him of having antiquated views on science.

This is the third article in the past three weeks where the pope has been in conflict with the public in some way. It seems to me that the pope is really trying to push his views and beliefs on the public. People should be able to believe in what ever they want to believe in as long as it does not disrespect other people that believe in other religions.

Yea, this is really interesting. I think this new pope has a real different feel from the JP2. He seems a little more... extreme in his stance on occasion. I personally don't see why Religion and Science have to come into conflict so often... Take for example Evolution. Some people say that we're divinely inspired, designed even, by God. Others maintain that we all evolved from lesser organisms through mutation and survival of the fittest... What if God uses Evolution as his tool to create? They don't seem mutually exclusive to me... I know thats not Really on topic here but it came to mind...

You know science has help us in so many areas. It is the understanding that comes from science that has allowed us to advance. I agree with your comment jnboraski. I do feel it all comes together as one and it fits together as a puzzle. God has his part in it all. I believe it all came from a higher source and slowly as time came about all things of this earth has its part in that time. Scientist are trying to figure out how God designed everything. It is the mysteries of things that keeps us wondering and allows us to farther ourselves as we discover newer things.

Love how you both arbitrarily inject "God" into your reasoning without any explanation at all. There is a debate for a reason.
