Thailand Will Not Interfere in Myanmar

Thailand Will Not Interfere in Myanmar

“Thailand's newly elected government will maintain a policy of noninterference in military-ruled Myanmar, the foreign minister said Thursday, adding that democracy and human rights are domestic issues.'' He was stating that those issues are not for Thailand’s concerns and they are not willing to help Myanmar.

This is following the Burmese monks protest and marches. This is when the government sent out troops to detain and kill the protestors. The article said, “Myanmar's crisis attracted world attention last September when Buddhist monks led anti-government protests, the biggest in two decades. The government detained thousands and killed at least 31 people.”

Myanmar has been ruled by the military since 1962, and its ruling junta is widely criticized for human rights abuses and failure to hand over power to a democratically elected government.

“We are not a headmaster who can tell Myanmar to do this or that,'' Noppadon, foreign minister, said in his first press conference since becoming foreign minister. ''The development of democracy and protection of human rights are Myanmar's internal affairs.'”

Myanmar has been fighting for democracy for a long time and now there is no help in changing their government to a democracy.

This is very tragic. I couldn't imagine knowing that a military that runs a country has been violating such basic human rights and not doing anything about it. I think that this is very sad. At the same time, I also think that this could be a positive. While the U.S. has gone into other countries to help "fix" them and "teach" them how to properly run a country, Thailand has decided to keep to itself. I think it will be interesting to see the outcomes of this. Maybe we can see what comes of this and compare it to the United States' situation!
