Turks protest over Islamic head scarves

Ashley Flaherty/ Feb. 8,2008 12:02pm/Religious Conflict

A 125,000 women in Turkey denounced the Islamic-rooted government on Saturday over a universities plans to lift a ban on Islamic head scarves. This would expand Turkish freedoms. The government wants to line Turkey with the European Union human rights guidelines but the military sees this as a serious threat to the country's secular traditions. The Parliament was expected to approve that women would be allowed to wear head scarves at universities as long as they expose their whole face. Protesters demanded to be able to wear more traditional head scarves. An aide to the Prime minister said "We want to lift all ridiculous bans in turkey; we want everyone to freely walk and receive education, either with their miniskirts or head scarves." Though many secular women feel that if universities allow women to wear head scarves that will eventually lead to them being pressured to cover their whole bodies. Saying that Turkey is secular and will remain secular. Police on Saturday prevented some 1,000 protesters from getting to the Parliament. Turkey's strict secular laws keep religion and state seperate.
I think that the women should be allowed to wear head scarves if they want too. Turkey should allow people to express their religion freely and leave them alone.

Women are finally breaking through the message that women's rights are human rights. Life is short, head scarfs are just a style statement.
