The See No Evil Foreign Policy

Alisha Casey/ November 14, 2008/ 8:00

It seems that South Africa is continuing to have some bad luck. It seems that there is one disappointment after another. Post apartheid Africa was a "shinning beacon of human rights" but now they are siding with nasty regimes around the world.

There was some hope that a change in leadership in South Africa could possibly cause a rippling effect into Zimbabwe but that has been proven untrue. It seems that there was some hope that the new president, Kgalema Motlanthe, could possibly be tougher than his predecessor, and change the current matters within the country. During the presidendial election between Kgalema Motlanthe and Robert Mugabe, it seems that the citizens supported Motlanthe with his decision to allow the Movement for Democratic Change (DMC) should be in charge and rule the ZANU-PF should control the army and intelligence organs. The Human Rights groups have noticed that Mr. Motlanthe's henchman are still prosecuting the DMC and there are riot police on the streets breaking up the anti-government protesters.

The DMC was very critical of Mr. Mugabe's stance is calling for help and it is evident that Human Rights groups have been wary of the Zimbabwean crisis that South Africa is heading towards. The UN Human Rights Council has voted to stop advocating for rights in Uzbekistan and Iran , despite the torture and killings these countries have been experiencing.

It seems that South Africa has been going through a lot economic, political and social changes. With the new president it seems that things are not improving yet. The Human rights groups need to step up in order to start making progress for the citizens in South Africa. Hopefully change will come for this country soon.

It seems as though this country is still fighting for some type of change, although they aren't sure yet which direction to go. The DMC needs to step up, like you said, and get things straightened out and make it work. Hopefully, one day, things will become better.
