This war has gone on way longer than anyone expected or imagined. President Obama’s upcoming decision will be very important in determining whether this war will go on for many more years or not. It is feasible that children born after 9/11 could be serving in the military before this war is over. No matter what Obama decides, his decision will be judged and the other option will look better in hindsight because success is impossible in this situation that he has been put in. It is good that the president is taking his time in deciding what to do, it has been good for everyone to take a step back and reassess the situation and where they and our country stand. Will we ever be able to leave knowing that we have accomplished the goal of denying Al Qaeda sanctuary? Obama has no good alternatives, only the burden of a decision.
He is right, there is no good decision here and no matter what Obama decides there will be many people made very upset by it. That being said I feel that Obama should make the decision that will for certain save the most lives. That would be to pull our troops from Afghanistan and bring them home. If no matter what he does it will be looked as the wrong decision then he should at least save some lives. The band Flobots sings that “The answers obvious / We switch the consonants / Change the sword to words and lift continents.” We should put down the sword and use our words and the world will be a better place for this. In eight years we have accomplished nothing in Afghanistan. We should have left long ago or never have even been there at all.
