Animal Destruction

Many are fluffy and adorable, others, not quite so much. Many lend a helping hand to the continuation of a human's health diet. They're animals, but who would have thought that animals, right along side with human, are the main contributes to global warming. With rising temperatures, melting ice caps, rising sea levels, un-natural weather patterns, and amond other things the human race is slowly being hindered. A main component for all these dangerous changes is live stock. "Live stock is responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions measured in CO2 equivalent". (Vegan Out reach) Not only do the transportation and living arrangments of live stock affect the atmosphere, but it also greatly affects the near by water basins. "It is probably the largest sectoral source of water pollution, contributing to eutrophication, “dead” zones in coastal areas, degradation of coral reefs, human health problems, emergence of antibiotic resistance and many others". (Vegan OUt Reach) Many of these run off pollutants are from animal run-off, man made chemicals, anti-bio-tics, and fertilizers. Land degradation is also a major component in the care of live stock. 70% of the Amazon has been depleted for the availability to raise large herds of live stock.

The necessity for live stock is inevitable. Not all of us have the Vegetarian/ Vegan gene that others have. We need places and methods to be able to raise live stock appropriately. However, there comes a time when we need to try and come up with more safe methods to raise live stock so that it wont impeded on our plants health. Using more earth friendly antibiotics, and or hormones could help greatly. Not much unfortunately can be done about the amount of animal waste, that is purely just apart of nature. “[W]hen nonvegetarians say that ‘human problems come first’ I cannot help wondering what exactly it is that they are doing for human beings that compels them to continue to support the wasteful, ruthless exploitation of farm animals.”(Peter Singer)

Well, we can all eat less meat. Americans eat about 8 oz of meat a day, almost double the world average. We each consume about 110 grams of protein a day, about twice the federal government’s recommended allowance; of that, (The recommended level is itself considered by many dietary experts to be higher than it needs to be.) It’s likely that most of us would do just fine on around 30 grams of protein a day. Eventually we won't be able to keep up this rate of consumption and prices will rise, but if that doesn't stop us maybe deforestation, pollution, climate change, starvation, heart disease and animal cruelty will cut down our meat consumption.

I agree with Kelley that we could all eat less meat, but I had no idea that this was occurring. It is quite funny how humans say we are so smart and we great yet we cause so much destruction.
