According to Doctor John M. Thorp, who has been studying the effects of flibanserin, “There is something that works on the neurotransmitters in the central nervous system to alter sexual desire in a positive way.” The study also shows that flibanserin increases satisfying encounters for women with low libido. At the Congress, researchers reported the results for 1,378 premenopausal women, average age 35, who took 100 milligrams of the drug or a placebo pill during a 24-week period. The women kept track of the number of satisfying sexual encounters - defined as intercourse, oral sex, masturbation, or genital caressing by their partners. All women were in a stable, monogamous relationship, and had a diagnosis of hypoactive sexual desire disorder, marked by a decrease or absence of sexual desire accompanied by distress. When researchers compared sexual events to those from weeks before, they found that those on the medication went from 2.8 sexually satisfying events to 4.5 in the final weeks.
This study is very interesting in the sense that women are now able to have a sexual stimulant medication much like Viagra for men. However, flibanserin is not like Viagra in that it is not just a reliable stimulant but also a medication that contributes to the improvement in the sexual functioning of women suffering from HSDD. These women have lost desire over time and for some time and are very distressed by it. A women’s desire is influenced by many factors including her feelings about sex, what sex means to her, and what types of intimacy she prefers.

It is interesting that if you look at the difference between sexual enhancement medications for males and females. The males need drugs to help them perform during sex. The females need drugs to make then even want to have sex.
Very interesting post! I agree with you and Katie that it is interesting to look at how men need drugs to have sex and some women need medication to even think about wanting to have sex.
