The region of Africa from Sudan through Kenya and Ethiopia to Somalia is still facing one of the worst droughts and food shortages that they have faced in years. According to the World Food Program there are approximately twenty million people who are still in need of food aid. However some would argue that these numbers may be inflated to help raise funds for relief agencies and non-governmental organizations. Climate is the most obvious and immediate cause of this situation. The dry areas of this region are unreliable when it come to climate. Locals and experts are concerned that climate change could make the crisis worse. The methods that they have for coping with climate change are made more difficult with the drought. The food shortage and famine has also become a political problem. Fighting and political uncertainty, along with massive displacement of some people, means that food aid is essential for the survival of many. The UN and Sudan missions has struggled to raise enough money to meet the needs of the crisis. The World Food Program has less than half of the funds that it needs to feed millions who are in need. However there are those who argue that food aid only perpetuates the problem of dependency and discourages people from going back to work and under credits local farmers.
This crisis is a growing problem through out the region. It is going to be hard for people to receive any help at all unless people and organizations are able to come together pulling their resources together in order to help the people of the region.
