Loosen Up: Doctor Claims a Link Between Bras and Breast Cancer

According to Doctor Sydney Singer, there is a link between bras and breast cancer and he suggests that more research needs to be done. However, the American Cancer Society continues to refute Singer’s claim. In his book Dressed to Kill, Singer explains that bras constrict fluid flow within the breasts and impair the circulation of blood flow. Blood flow helps replenish oxygen and removes carbon dioxide from the body. This fluid helps remove cancer cells, bacteria and other toxins which cause disease. Singer believes this “breast-binding culture” forces women to wear bras when the bra is doing more hurt than help. The toxins that build up in the breasts and constriction of the bras may cause cysts to form. For this reason Singer believes the bra is also a major cause of breast cancer because it is the tightest piece of clothing and the breast is where cancer is mostly found in women.

This study is somewhat believable but I do not believe that bras cause breast cancer. However, I do think that tight clothing and the obsession with having large breasts does affect young girls and women of today’s culture. Though it still seems hard to believe that someone who wears a bra that’s too tight could cause an internal disease. What can women do so protect their body yet remain comfortable throughout the day? Maybe women should try to only wear a bra when they absolutely need to or at least loosen the garment to feel more comfortable.

I also found this a little hard to believe. I think that if this was true then something would have been said a long time before now. If it is true it would help us to identify an easy solution, even though it would not be the only cause.

I think that it is a little hard to believe that there could be a link between bras and breast cancer. I don’t see how something that you wear could have a connection to cancer.
