According to a Russian article, Russia’s nickel mining company, Norilsk Nickel, acknowledged Norway’s accusation of over pollution caused by the company. However, NorNickel has said that they have been tackling the problem. They say that they have been carrying out and utilizing extensive modernization of its facilities to reduce the environmental damage and health risks that are being placed upon people in nearby areas. This was said after Norway stopped investing in the firm using its pension fund over ethical considerations. Norway had recommended selling the pension fund’s stock in NorNickel since there is plenty of evidence that the company is causing health problems to local residents. The company has produced an abundance of sulfur dioxide and heavy metal in the atmosphere. However, NorNickle claims that they will turn the situation around—but it will take some time.
I’m really glad that this problem is being addressed and I’m glad that Norway brought it to attention. I can understand why they would not want to be affiliated with a company that was causing so much harm to the environment and so many health risks for the people in the area. However, I do hope that NorNickle is really serious about trying to solve the problem—rather than just stating that they will so that they do not lose their funding. Hopefully they are taking into the consideration the people who are suffering due to the pollution their company is producing, rather than being worried about making a few extra dollars.
