Getting extra sleep on the weekends sounds like a great idea for those who work or go to school all week long. But some doctors believe, like Dr. Daniel Kripke believe that too much sleep does not always make you feel better. There are risks you take when you don't get enough sleep such as more traffic accidents, weight gain, decreased productivity, and less immune system protection. There is no medical evidence to support this theory but it is evident. The idea that you are in-between sleep and wakefulness when your asleep for long periods of time is sleep drunkenness. Its described as having a feeling of “blah”. Taking long showers to wake up and drinking many cups of coffee even after 12 hours of sleep. If someone habitually sleeps excessively you could potentially cut your life span. Micheal Breus a director for a sleep clinic says less then 5 hours and more then 10 hours of sleep can increase your mortality rate. Those who sleep excessively may be suffering from: poor quality sleep (the quality of sleep is not the same as quantity), other medical conditions (apnea, narcolepsy, depression or restless leg syndrome) and/or genetical problems.
I found this article to be interesting because I feel very tired even if I sleep for a long period of time. I don't take naps because it takes me so long to fall asleep so I just wait for weekends to fall asleep. My roommate now sleeps all the time and she says she always sleeps because she is always tired which I believe is due to her sleeping so much. I found it ironic that people who sleep for too long can increase their mortality rate. I always say to people who sleep a lot that they sleep their lives away, now it may be true.

I thought this was pretty interesting. What a relief we have college, where abstinence from oversleeping isn't too difficult. I wonder how much connection there is between sleep patterns and lifestyle; I would imagine more sedimentary and consumption-based activities promote a lot of "grogginess." It's kind of remarkable that we live in a place where we even have the option of taking naps and sleeping for 12 hours. I've also heard that you can't catch up on sleep like you can on schoolwork.
That was very interesting. I have heard that sleeping too much is actually bad for you and I've been wanting to read more information about it. Whenever I nap for a long time, I always feel even more tired than I did before I went to sleep. So I can see how much of an effect it can have on people.
I sleep for like...12 hours at a time if I can. I sometimes have a headache after a long sleep though.
