Plot to Kill Pakistan Prime Minister Uncovered

Today in Pakistan several people have been arrested for their involvement in a plot to kill Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. The arrests were made after police stopped three of the suspects traveling on motorcycles in the town of Ahmed Pur Sharkia during a routine police patrol. The suspects arrested confessed to the police that they were following orders from a militant group in the turmoil ridden tribal regions of the country. A few of them went as far as to say that their orders came directly from Kari Imram a leader of the a Taliban Offshoot group from Miran Shah in north Waziristan. According to a police official, the suspects plan was to use a car bomb to strike the Gilani’s compound in the city of Multan. Although the suspects had not actually acquired a car at the time of their arrest, the police were able to confiscate a large amount of fertilizer which was to be used to manufacture an explosive device. Police also seized one kilogram of gold and another two and a half kilograms of silver that would have been used to fund the plot.

I thought that this was an interesting article for a few different reasons. The first reason being that the plot was stopped before the prime minister was harmed. Every other day there is a story in the news about terrorist blowing up a building and killing innocent people. It’s not often that you get to hear about anyone stopping the terrorist before they strike. I feel that articles like this one give the public a sense of hope that precautions are being taken to help try and counteract against terrorism. Another reason I chose to write about this article was because this was a plot to take out the national leader. If the police hadn’t intervened then the outcome of the situation could have been much worse. The country would have been in turmoil and could have possibly been taken over by the terrorist.

I agree with you that this story is very interesting in the fact that the plot was stopped before it was followed through. But although yes there are precautions being taken to reduce terrorist attacks, really there is only so much that police and officials can do to be completely productive. And of course if you are higher up in a political or religious position such as a prime minister, you should know you could be a target for some sort of attack. Overall, I am glad that this attack was caught before the act was followed through.
