Hardly a month after its failure to stop the growth of its settlements on the West Bank, Two Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli military raid in the West Bank city of Hebron. Several people were injured in the raid, which took place early this morning, and several people have been detained. The Israeli military conducted the raid in the interest of killing or detaining Nash'aat Al-Karmi, who was wanted in connection with a shooting on the 31st of August that resulted in the death of four settlers. Al-Karmi was a senior military commander with the Palestinian organization Hamas. He was also a thirty year resident of Hebron, where the raid took place. Hamas has also declared this to be a “murderous attack” and has avowed revenge. According to the Israeli Defense Force (IDF), the raid was part of an ongoing operation for “suspected militants,” though the IDF has not provided much information on the subject. There were also some reports that IDF soldiers attacked journalists, and that their video recordings were confiscated.
I believe that this is yet another incident of Israel trying to assert control over Palestine. They did not care that the land that the settlements that they’re building is not theirs, yet they continue to build settlements on it. Israel is not completely in the wrong if what they say is true, if they came into the Palestinian city to prevent a terrorist attack on their own country. However, they did not ask Palestinian permission to even be in the country, much less killing people within the borders of Palestine. The alleged attacks and confiscation of journalism materials also suggests that the IDF has something to hide in this matter. This is maybe a little more aggressive a foreign policy than Israel may be interested in right now, especially considering their move last month, allowing the West Bank settlements to be continued. I believe that it will be interesting to see how this affects the latest “peace talks” that the two nations are holding.
