Incorrect Cell Lines Used for Worldwide Cancer Research

Since the month of January European cancer researchers have been on the lookout for a reason tumor cell lines could possibly be misleading in determining a cure for cancer. Esophageal cancer is cancer that occurs in the esophagus — a long hollow tube that runs from your throat to your stomach. Esophageal cancer usually begins in the cells that line the inside of the esophagus. Esophageal cancer can occur anywhere along the esophagus, but in people in the United States, it occurs most often in the lower portion of the esophagus. A Dutch team conducted a study to test human cell lines and found out of the 13 esophageal cancer cell lines 3 of the ones used for worldwide testing and research were actually from lung, colorectal (colon or rectum) and other malignancies. This means they had been searching for answers to treat a completely different strain of cancer than had been given. After going through individuals work they found over one hundred different papers that had been published involved these false strains of esophageal cancer to some sort of extent within them making them all incorrect.
In my reaction this is a terrible story due to the fact that so many papers were made using these false esophageal cell lines. It presents the question how did they get these three other cell lines and why couldn't anyone tell the difference? What can be done about this data and how many people has it harmed or could it have harmed due to this false publications. It's quite a challenge for medical researchers to have to start over or announce there evidence was wrong due to misidentification i could imagine.
