This week in Brooklyn, NY there were a total of 52 shootings across the city this past weekend. Crime was at a very high rate for that weekend. The type of crimes committed ranged from public urination, shootings, stabbings, subway trouble, unauthorized bank activity, burglaries and the list continues. Two women were caught doing public urination after being told they could not use a restroom in a fast food restaurant. In the shootings a man was shot in the buttocks. Another man had not been wounded but was shot at five times. A male and his fiancé were struck by a bottle and a gun which led to the theft of everything that was worth anything being stolen. The shooting spree continued with many other shootings in the city. Someone was stabbed for no apparent reason. Their attacker just decided to run up and stab them and take off running again. A woman had her purse, which contained her cell phone, debit card and many other valuable items stolen from the subway. In the same subway three other women were attacked and some of those attacks led to some of their personal belongings being stolen.
The list of crimes that happened in this city over the past weekend was ridiculous. These crimes cause many problems for the people of the community and could possibly affect surrounding cities and people. According to the article, “overall the 88th percentile saw a fairly large crime wave between August 29 and Sept 24, which was the highest for the year”. There was also talk of a crime increase because of Hurricane Irene. Despite what natural disaster the state was facing only in the city of Brooklyn did the crime rate skyrocket dramatically. In order to decrease the amount of crime in this city I think that local authorities have to do more than what they are normally doing. Going above and beyond of call of duty is the only way the decrease the crime in this city and make the community and the people in the community feel safe again.
