Nigerians are faced with many
problems today. One of their
biggest problems is the Islamic group, Boko Haram. Boko Haram is responsible for many innocent Nigerians lives. This group’s purpose is to make the
North of Nigeria ungovernable for President Goodluck Jonathan. The NYSC or National Youth Service
Corps have removed their graduates because of the mayhem that is going on. The ASUU, which stands for the Academic
Staff Union of Universities have been on strike for a month and because the
government has been focusing on Boko Haram, it have not had much time to focus
on the strike. In 2009, the
ASUU and Deacon Gamaliel Onosode reached an agreement to review lectures’
salaries, funding the universities and maintenance existing issues which the
government has failed to implement over the years. The conditions have worsened over the years and Onosode have
failed to keep the agreement. The 2012 budget that President Jonathan has
presented implies that Nigeria is not ready to move forward in education. The article says that many Nigerian
universities cannot compete with international universities and other African
schools because of the strike and unmet promises.
I believe that this is not only a
social problem but a global issue because many innocent people are losing their
lives because of Boko Haram’s rebellion to the government. Boko Haram’s rebellion is not only
taking lives but also causing many people to lose their jobs and causing many
students not to compete in education on a global level. Also stated in the article is that many
cannot afford a free education because fee for part time and full time students
have gone up and scholarships are being depleted. This situation becomes a social problem because the
unemployment rate has gone up since the rebellion and many graduates cannot
find jobs after graduating school.
