Blog #6 Breast milk can cut malnutrition

This article talks of how if mothers would breast feed their children more, then they would be able to keep them from being malnutrition-ed. This could be a great break through for the families who have malnutrition in their children. It says that most of the mothers don't breast feed because they feel it is a sign of poverty, but really it is very healthy, and good for the babies. Also the mothers have to go back to work so soon after the baby is born that they have to worry about getting them formula because they can't breast feed them when they aren't there. Malnutrition is a real problem in South Africa, and another reason for their troubles is that they start to feed their children solid food as soon as two months old. Some women were scared to breast feed for fear of spreading HIV or AIDS, but they now have drugs to keep from spreading it to the babies through the breast milk.
If we were able to better educate these women, and show them that it is healthy for their babies, then they would probably be willing to do it to help keep their kids healthy and alive. Another thing is it could keep them out of poverty instead of in it. The reason for this they wouldn't have to spend any extra money on the formula, and they would keep their kids happy and healthy. The downside though is that they would have to spend money on the medicine to keep from passing on diseases to their children. This is a blessing, but could also be a problem because of the extra money they are having to spend to get the drugs, but it probably won't be as much as the formula actually costs. Many women should know that they could keep their children healthy by breast feeding, and by doing it for a long time. That will help the child and family hunger that is going on in our world.
