I'm still alive, and I'll be back, says arch-terrorist
Kayla Morgan (blog # 11) 4/10/11 7:46 p.m. Doku Umarov is Russia’s most wanted terrorist. While many people thought he had been killed in a raid last month, he made a phone call to a local Russian radio station. He assured the people that he was in good health and he warned them of further terrorist attacks. This call left people completely shocked because most believed he had been dead for week. Umarov claimed responsibility for some of Russia’s worst terrorost attacks in recent years. While making this phone call to the Radio Liberty late on Thursday, he denied all rumors of him every being killed or ill, stating, "I have no complaints about my health," said the caller, speaking Chechen and claiming to be Umarov, "It's all good, and I don't know what illnesses the Russians are talking about." Okay, in my opinion this story really frustrates me. What nerve does this guy have, to call into a radio station to state that he is not ill. This man has taking responsibility for many terrorist attacks in the recent years and has caused a lot of pain to the Russian people. Now I know this man obviously is not in his right mind, but a terrorist calling into a radio station is ridiculous. It is like he is taunting the people of Russia saying that there will be another attack soon but you can do nothing about it. Rare Bomb Rattles Jerusalem
Kayla Morgan (blog # 10) 4/1/11 Soc-202 10:47p.m. Around 3 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon a bomb attack in central Jerusalem occurred, injuring at least 30 people, and causing the death of one elderly woman. According to the Israeli police, this was the first major terrorist attack since 2004. The attack happened during the busiest time of the day, with lots of traffic, buses, and pedestrians around. Police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said a bag containing a bomb was placed on the sidewalk near a crowd of people getting on and off two city buses. So far there are no witnesses’ or suspects for the responsibility of the bombing. Officer Rosenfeld assured the people that since the attack, greater security is in order to prevent any future attacks. Police said they received a call saying there was an abandoned bag near the bus station. During the call, the bomb went off. Still no idea on who made the police call, or if it was related to the bombing. Luckily at the time of the attack, the bus was not crowded or it could have been an even more devastating scenario. The explosive contained sharpnel that caused shattered windows and many injuries. When paramedics arrived, they stated that everyone was in a complete panic. Nir Barkat, Jerusalem’s mayor, said that this was a cowardly act of terror that won’t disrupt normal life here. It has been a long time since Jerusalem has seen a bombing. Now they have had plenty in the past, but have not had to go through this type of fear since around 2004. As Mayor Barket stated, “The key is to move on.” This is exactly what this city needs to do. Don’t let these bombers get the satisfaction of the people being scared for their lives on a daily basis, like they have been in the past years. Now I know this is a lot easier said than done, but hopefully the people of Jerusalem can continue to be strong during this awful act of terrorism. This is definitely not the worst bombing this city has seen, but that is not the point. Anytime a human like is taken, it should be considered a huge deal. Many Killed in Afghanistan Suicide Attack
Northern Afghanistan is becoming very well known for terrorist activity. In the city of Kunduz thirty seven were killed in a suicide attack at an army recruitment center on March 14, 2011. This is the third major assault in the area in less than a month, said the deputy governor. The Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid claimed that he was the one responsible for the attack, in which he was supporting the militant Islamist group. In this attack, many were wounded and killed. People around the area claimed they heard gunfire after the attack but the deputy of the Kunduz province claimed it was just a onetime suicide bomber. People that were killed and injured in this attack included new recruits, army soldiers and civilians. The Kunduz area has become one of the main bases for rebellions for the past few years now. Just one week prior to this act of terrorism, Kunduz police chief was killed by yet another suicide bomber while he was patrolling the city. In just the month of February alone, thirty three people were killed by another sort of suicide bomber in a government office while citizens were gathered to collect identity cards. Officials believe that violence is on the rise and it is just going to continue to worsen.
The area of Kunduz must be in a great deal of mourning at this point. So many terrorist attacks have been taking place in this province in such a short amount of time. Close to hundreds of innocent lives have been taken as well. I guess I will never understand why it is so important to these suicide bombers to not only take there own lives, but peoples lives around them that have nothing to do with the reason they are bombing the place to begin with. Think about all the children who get affected in these bombings. It is just not fair that all these lives are taken. It is bad enough when you go and bomb other countries, like what a lot of terrorist attacks are, but when you are bombing your own country, it just simply does not make any sense to me. Your country should want to stand together and be proud of the nation in which you live in.

New Jersey Men Plead Guilty To Terrorism Conspiracy Charges
Mohamed Alessa and Carlos Almonte pleaded guilty on March 3rd in a federal court in Newark, New Jersey, to conspiring to murder people outside the U.S. by joining a Somali terrorist group. They were arrested June 5th at an airport where both men admitted they were flying to Egypt on their way to join the Islamic Al-Shabaab movement in Somalia. They even confessed that they wanted to murder people whose beliefs were against Muslim law. Both men agreed to a charge saying that they discussed traveling to Somalia from Egypt, quoting “receiving training, instruction and weapons from other violent extremist, and committing acts of violence that included shooting and murder.” Both men a dual citizens. Alessa is a citizen in the U.S. and in Jordan, while Almonte is a U.S. and Dominican Republic citizen. Paul Fishman, a U.S. attorney said in a statement, “ the defendants planned and trained for a mission that began in their New Jersey neighborhoods and would end with the murder of innocent civilians.”
Now I understand the point of a lawyer is to plead your case and get your defendant off the hook, but as I was reading more into this article, I noted that Alessa’s attorney stated, “No one was killed. No one was bombed.” This statement makes absolutely no sense to me. Luckily no one was hurt, but that is not the point. The point is that it was planned for innocent people to get killed just because they did not agree with the Muslim laws. If these two men were not arrested, god only knows what they would have done. Anyone who says and admits to half the stuff these boys did, deserves to be locked up, no if and or buts about it. One of the things Alessa said to his attorney was, “I wanna, like, be the world’s known terrorist.” This is once again another example of terrorist living in your very own neighborhood, maybe people you did not suspect at all.

Saudi man charged with plotting terrorist attack

Saudi Arabian man charged with plotting terrorist attack
Twenty year old Khalid Ali Aldawsari is a college student from Saudi Arabia, who is studying chemical engineering in the state of Texas. He was caught buying explosive chemicals over the internet as part of his plan to make bomb materials. His scheme was to hide the explosives inside dolls and baby carriages to blow up dams, nuclear plants and also the Dallas home of former President George W. Bush. He was already reported to the FBI on February 1st by the Carolina Biological Supply after making suspicious purchases. In the ongoing weeks, federal agents tracked down other purchases he had made and found extremist post he put up online. One thing they found wrote, “It is war…. until the infidels leave defeated.” Aldawsari first came to the states in 2008 making him legal in the U.S. on a student visa. He was charged on Thursday with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, and will appear in court on Friday. Aldawsari apparently sent emails to himself of places he was planning to bomb, listing twelve reservoir dams in Colorado and California. Also on the list he mentioned the “Tyrant’s House” which had former president Bush’s address attached to it. FBI said the North Carolina company that reported Aldawsari, was asking him a lot questions concerning why he was purchasing all the different chemicals, making him frustrated, so he later canceled his order and learned how to make the explosive TNP himself.
I read a comment regarding this article and it stated that this is why we should let no foreign male into the U.S. especially after 9/11. I disagree with this comment completely. Yes there are some sick and heartless people in the world, but that does not give us the right to label everyone who may look a certain way, or be from a certain part of the world. This terrorism case did prove that foreigners can live quietly in the U.S. without any suspicions from peers, teachers and anyone else around them. But we have to keep an open mind and not think that every foreigner is a terrorist. I’m sure there are many other people in the world planning terrorist attacks right now against the U.S., and some might be just like Aldawsari, the type that no one suspects. But luckily this time law officials responded to the threat quickly and no one was hurt.

Indonesia's radical cleric on trial for terrorism

Indonesia Man on Trial for Terrorism
On Monday February 14th 2011, in Jakarta Indonesia, 72 years old Abu Bakar Bashir went to trial, on charges of setting up a terror cell accused of plotting high profile assassinations and attacks on foreigners in the world’s most populous Muslim nation. If found guilty he faces a maximum penalty of the death sentence. Before arriving at the courthouse Bashir stated with a smile on his face, “ These charges against me are fabricated. All I ever wanted to do was defend Islam.” With 237 million people, Indonesia is the most secular nation, and has been hit with bombings and various other forms of terrorist attacks blamed on Jemaah Islamiyah, which is an al Qaida linked network, in which Bashir helped found just over ten years ago. He has been tried in earlier years for conspiracy on other attacks, which lead to over 260 people being killed, and has done jail time for violating immigration laws, but nothing as serious as his most recent trial. Unlike the past, this time prosecutors are almost positive that they have enough evidence for a terror conviction. He is being accused of helping arrange, financial support, are and mobilize foot soldiers for a new terror cell that was uncovered last year in westernmost Aceh province as part of the efforts to take out an Islamic state. Officials say al Qaida in Aceh was planning bombings on Western hotels and embassies and several high profile assassinations, including on Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Also this cell was blamed last year for many bank robberies, supposedly for getting money to but all the weapons to make attacks.
Terrorist attacks are never good no matter where or when they happen, but for Indonesia, this is a really hard time for there nation. Recently religious tensions and violence has been occurring quite often. Networks such as al Qaida’s, Jemaah Islamiyah, need to stop and think about all the violence they are creating. I know they could personally care less, but they cause so much violence and sadness in the world when it is simply not necessary. Abu Bakar Bashir made the comment that all he wanted to do was defend Islam, well you can definitely find another way to defend instead of choosing to kill hundreds of innocent people all the time.

N.C. Man Guilty In Terrorism Case
On Wednesday Daniel Boyd a local from Raleigh, North Carolina pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to support terrorist and conspiracy to murder, kidnap, maim, and injure people in other countries. 40 year old Boyd was assisted by seven others who were first indicated in 2009 for training and planning to carry out terrorist attacks in places like Kosovo, Jordan and the Gaza Strip. He is the first to plead guilty out of the group. Boyd is a U.S citizen and his sentencing which may lead to life in prison, will be held in May. Boyd also went by the name Saifullah. He has two sons and they are also being charged in this case. This is not the first time Boyd has been accused of these terrorist acts. Between 1989 and 1992 he was accused of going to Pakistan and Afghanistan to receive training and also fighting in Afghanistan. Boyd was mainly plotting to launch attacks overseas, and while officials raided his home they said he was planning some act of violence, finding guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition. He attended local mosques and operated a drywall company in a small quiet town of Willow Spring. Mauri Saalakhan is a representative of the Peace Through Justice Foundation in Washington, stated that Boyd was known for exaggerating his advantages overseas and “that may have played a large part in the trouble he has gotten himself into.”
A lot of people choose to believe that terrorism only takes place in other countries, but clearly this is a very strong example that proves acts like this are happening everyday in our own country. U.S. Attorney George Holding said in a statement, “this case proves the world is changing. Terrorist are no longer from foreign countries but also citizens who live within our own borders.” In my opinion, the world is just the same as it‘s been for a while. Acts of terrorism have been happening for quite a while now. For example, the Klu Klux Klan. This is a violent hate group who kills people who are not the same and do not believe in the same issues as them. I believe that both of these groups of people are committing the same amount of terrorist behavior. Either way it does not justify why people choose to create violence and hate in there own country. It is bad enough that we are in a war with other countries, the last thing we need is more violence within our own nation. This should be a time when people are coming together, not fighting one another.

Somali ax man guilty of terrorism in attack on cartoonist

Blog # 3 Terrorist Attack on Cartoonist
On Thursday January 6th, a Somali man was sentenced guilty in a Danish court to the act of terrorism. On New Years Day, he entered the home of cartoonist Kurt Westergaard in the northwestern town of Aarhus. Mr. Westward was known for his 12 published drawings of the Prophet Mohammed back in 2005. These drawings raised many issues and caused a lot of protest in January and February of 2006. It also caused the torching of Danish diplomatic officers in Damascus and Beirut and the death of many people in Nigeria. The defendant may not be named but we know he was 29 years old. As soon as he entered Mr. Westergaards house with an axe in his hand, Westergaards locked himself inside a his bathroom which was also a panic room and alerted the police. The defendant stated in the court room that he had no intentions of killing him, just wanted to scare him. Luckily Mr. Westergaard was unharmed, unlike a police officer that responded to the call. On top of being charged with an act of terrorism, the defendant will be charged with attempted murder of throwing an axe at an officer. The defendant stated that he chose to break into his home after reading on the internet that Westergaard “was proud of the drawing and wanted to do more.”
Now I can see how people might not view this issue as a severe terrorist attack, but in my opinion, no attack should go unmentioned. Like Prosecutor Kirsten Dyrman stated, the defendant did in fact try and kill Mr. Westergaard, so the crime should be viewed as terrorism because it aimed to “seiously frighten the population”. Now with this case luckily nobody was hurt, but that does not make the issue better. You can not just go around trying to “scare” people just because you do not agree with an issue they may bring up. In this world people are never going to agree on the same issues, but that does not mean we should go around trying to kill one another.

These drawings raised many issues and caused a lot of protest in January and February of 2006. It also caused the torching of Danish diplomatic officers in Damascus and Beirut and the death of many people in Nigeria. The defendant may not be named but we know he was 29 years old. As soon as he entered Mr. Westergaards house with an axe in his hand, Westergaards locked himself inside a his bathroom which was also a panic room and alerted the police. The defendant stated in the court room that he had no intentions of killing him, just wanted to scare him. Luckily Mr. Westergaard was unharmed, unlike a police officer that responded to the call. On top of being charged with an act of terrorism, the defendant will be charged with attempted murder of throwing an axe at an officer. The defendant stated that he chose to break into his home after reading on the internet that Westergaard “was proud of the drawing and wanted to do more.”
Now I can see how people might not view this issue as a severe terrorist attack, but in my opinion, no attack should go unmentioned. Like Prosecutor Kirsten Dyrman stated, the defendant did in fact try and kill Mr. Westergaard, so the crime should be viewed as terrorism because it aimed to “seiously frighten the population”. Now with this case luckily nobody was hurt, but that does not make the issue better. You can not just go around trying to “scare” people just because you do not agree with an issue they may bring up. In this world people are never going to agree on the same issues, but that does not mean we should go around trying to kill one another.

Terrorst attack comes at a sensitive time for Russia

Blast in Moscow’s Busiest Airport
On Monday January 24th, a suicide bomber attacked Russia in the city of Moscow. The attack happened around 4:30 P.M. in Moscow’s busiest airport. By the end of the night police reported that at least 35 people have been killed and 168 injured. The attack came at a sensitive time for the Russians. Just a month before the attack, ethnic Russian nationalists lashed out violently at migrants from the troubled region. The country was already split between ethnic lines and was under a lot of stress due to that, and the attack has now added even more worries to this country. Dealing with injuries, it just did not affect Russians but among everyone injured, were Britain, French and Italian citizens. As of right now, no American citizens were harmed. Stephen A. Baker, a former official with the Department of Homeland Security, quoted, “They’d like to be bombing planes and they can’t, so they’re bombing airports,” Since the attack, the airport security has gotten even more strict and officials are personally checking every single bag, even handbags, causing a huge backup with people waiting in lines causing plane schedules to be delayed. Previous terrorist attacks have occurred in the past, but as of Monday night no suspects have been named. Russian president Dmitri A. Mevedev, made a televised announcement saying he did believe the bombing was a terrorist act.
To me, I just do not understand how or why there is so much hate in the world. Every week you hear about a different terrorist attack somewhere around the globe. With this case having a suicide bomber, he is not only taking the lives of everyone around him, but his own life too. How can a person agree to do this knowing they are going to die? There is a huge difference in this and lets say joining the US army. Yes when you join the army there is a chance you may not come back alive, but at least you know you are doing a good thing and fighting for your country. A suicide bomber has not a single ounce of courageousness or honor in them. This is a social problem because like I said before, it not only effects the bomber but everyone around him.

Worst bombing in Iraq in months
In Baghdad, a suicide bomber took the lives of at least 60 people and over 150 wounded. This is the biggest attack Iraq has seen in months. The attack took place in Tikrit, north of Baghdad, which is best known for Saddam Hussein's hometown. It all happened when prspective police recruits were gathered outside of an entrance at the provincial police headquarters. They were told ahead of time, not to all gather around this area because in the past, previous terrorist attacks have occurred there. Around 9:30 a.m. the bomber detonated a vest rigged with explosives. The head of police there was fired and the attack is still under investigaton. They do not have any suspects coming forth, but are looking into a know terrorist group in Iraq, al Qaida. A fellow member of the Tikrit area said he believes that the terrorist were exploiting the fact that the prime ministers new government has not named its ministers to head the key of security. The al Qaida are the main suspects because they have committed acts similar to this recently in the past.
To me I cannot even begin to process how someone could take the lives of innocent people. It does not make any sense. Yes it is ok to disagree with your government, because of course everyone is not always going to agree with the same issues, but bombing your own country is not the answer. Fellow member of the Tikrit community quoted, "there are many sides who do not want this country to stabalize, they want Iraq to remain in everlasting chaos because it serves their interest." This is true, not just in Tikrit, but all around the world. People only think about what they want, and not what is best for the world around them. Iraq is working to improve there government and terrorist groups such as, al Qaida are doing everything in their power to bring it down. My question is, "what makes someone build up so much hate inside themselves, that they have to create terrorist attacks in order to get there point across?"
