U.N. food expert seeks moratorium on biofuels

Claudia Parsons, reports that more and more soil for crop growing is being used for biofuels. This is harmful to many people because, biofuels are causing food prices to sky rocket. With almost more than 900,000 people suffering from hunger, the use of crop growing soil for biofuels will only increase this number. This issue is particularly difficult because the use of biofuels developed because of the growing concern of the climate change. Now because of the new interest in alternative fuels the food resources are being cut dramatically. Currently the United States and Brazil are leading in the use of biofuels as alternative fuel. The real problem is using food crops for biofuels, when potential other crops could be of benefit. In some areas such as India the idea of using land unsuitable for growing crops is being used to produce biofuels.
There are many people who support both sides of this issue. Many feel that the world’s hunger crisis is more important than the climate change. Others see the need for new energy sources to eliminate global warming as being a more significant problem. Both sides of this issue are contributing to the harm and wellbeing of many globally. Hunger is affecting millions world wide and so is global warming. To benefit the world as a whole both problems need to be addressed from an entirely different perspective. Nothing good can come of eliminating soil that could produce food for thousands of people. With the United Nations new request for a five-year moratorium on biofuels, new guidelines are likely to appear.
