According to an article from StraitsTimes, Indonesia passed a new environment law last month. This law is directed at any firm, company, or factory that has any type of effect on the environment. However, this law may take as long as two years to implement. This law will allow the government to revoke the polluters’ business licenses. Environmentalists believe that this will lead to more effective enforcement. It is apparent that Indonesia wants to pass this law, because its rapid economic growth has been accompanied by pollution of its waterways, soil, air, and destruction of its forests and wildlife. Though Indonesia is working hard to pass these laws, it still ranks as one of the world’s most corrupt countries. The law they are passing will require companies to obtain an environmental license and undergo an assessment before starting their operations. Also, there will be tough fines for polluters.
I was really glad to read this article. Pollution is becoming a major problem, and it’s good to see that people are beginning to realize it and are actually starting to take action. I believe that Indonesia’s law is a great idea and I believe that it will be very effective. Having these companies and factories go through environmental assessments will cut back on pollution dramatically. The fines will be very effective as well. If companies are constantly paying pollution fines, it prevents them from making their own profits. Eventually, this cycle will become a hindrance, and hopefully they’ll do something about the pollution they are causing. I hope that other countries will begin to take these steps as well to create healthier environments.

I wonder about the feasibility of such laws. As you said, Indonesia is a pretty corrupt nation, and even in our own country plenty of big businesses have gone unpunished for horrible acts of pollution. There's no question that the laws are necessary and are a good sign that Indonesia is looking after its environment and people, but I think it will be a long time before we see the laws taking effect.
I am also glad that governments are trying to reduce pollution. It has been a major problem for a long time and I feel like our earth needs to be better taken care of. It is obviously going to be a hard law to enforce and it will take a lot of time and effort from many individuals, but I think it is a step in the right direction.
