Escalating Violence in Ivory Coast

Blog #8

On Friday, there was what the U.N. called a shocking escalation of violence in the Ivory Coast, 25 people were killed. There are fears that the country might be headed towards a civil war. France called the violence on Thursday a "deliberate massacre of civilians" and called on the United Nations Security Council to adopt sanctions against self-declared President Laurent Gbagbo and his circle. Gbagbo's challenger, Alassane Ouattara, was the winner of the November election and the recognized legitimate leader of the West African nation but Gbagbo has refused to give up power. The United Nations refugee agency reported heavy shelling in the Abobo neighborhood of Abidjan that was responsible for the deaths and injuries. Earlier in the week, attacks were reported in other parts of Abidjan, the commercial center of Ivory Coast, said a spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. A UNHCR monitor reported that 30 shops were burned Thursday and empty bullet shell casings littered the streets. All this violent warfare that is going on in the streets isn't helping anybody in the Ivory Coast. All it does is displacing thousands and thousands of citizens all trying to get away. And the countries they go have to deal with hiding homes for them. No doubt they'll have trouble adjusting to the norms and the children's development will definitely be effected.
