Blog #3

According to an article written at http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2015/02/18/never-again-jews-can-no-longer-live-in-europe-without-fear/ the president of French Assembly President Lacher proclaimed that the assault that have fallen on the French Jewish community will end and all Jewish citizens will be able to live normal lives. However, what is the normal life for a Jewish person in a country that cannot ensure their protection? The Israeli Prime Minister stated that because of the large number of Muslims in the nation of France that was brought there for cheap labor, Jews would never be as safe as they could be in the State of Israel.  The article continued to go on by dividing the Muslim citizens into two categories one that of 99% of the Muslim community that has turned away from the violent example that their brothers portrayin the news and 1% that believes they should do their part in cleansing the world. Therefore the Jewish Community in France is neither protected nor free to practice their religious beliefs without fear of persecution from the state and/or their fellow citizens.
The message that I am gathering from this article is a call to return home from the Israeli Prime Minister. He seems to be painting a picture that the religious diversity within France is too dangerous to ensure that Jewish citizens would be protected either from Islamic extremist or from not religious extremist like the government. France has had a long history of problem involving religious diversity. From the persecutions of Moors (Muslims) and Jews during the age of enlightenment. The religious wars between the Catholics and the Huguenots during the 16th century when the streets of Paris ran with bloody.  Based on these facts the Prime Minister has a valid point of wanting his fellow Jews to return to their ancestral homeland where they will be truly protected from their enemies and free to Practice their faith without persecution from the government.

Blog 3: At least 15 dead in attack on high-profile Mogadishu hotel

Shocking events have occurred in Somalia on Friday when the Central Hotel was under attack. The events at the hotel killed 15 people, including a couple members of Parliament and a deputy mayor. The viscous attack started from when a mysterious car packed with fierce explosives blew up not to far from the presidential place. The first explosion triggered a flow of event which first included warfare between the guards and the attackers. Then followed a blast from a suicide bomber which was a female near a mosque. The attackers then shot there way in to the building. Bloodshed was all around the area as explosives went off around the building. The 20 people was also wounded throughout the attack on the hotel. Al-Shabaab is an Islamist terrorist group that is taking responsibility for the attack at the Somalian hotel. The presidential palace tweeted about the situation. "He the president of #Somalia: 'attacking lawmakers and citizens just after Friday prayers: #AlShabaab are un-Islamic and anti-democracy." Since the mid-2000s, they have tried to take control of Somalia. The reasoning behind that is possibly because the country of Somalia is one of the poorest countries in the world so the control and power behind the officials aren't very strong. The attackers in the group have aimed at Somalian officials, soldiers and institutions. The hotel attack isn't the only attack that the group has carried out in the recent years. In 2013, Al-Shabaab gunned down shoppers in Nairobi, Kenya. They tortured the shoppers and after four days 67 people were counted to be dead. Al-Shabaab wants its respect and will continue to attack until they get what they want.

Banning on Child Brides in Malawi

Summary:
Last week, I spoke of an African child bride and the multitude of effects she faced in her young life and of her looking at other girls her age who were able to be children and go to school. This week, I found an article that exemplifies the importance of going to school and of banning child brides in hopes to bring them a better life and build a good education. The Gender Equality and Women Empowerment act, says Nyasa Times, says this act is aiming to help young women to realize their potential and to encourage them to go to school and succeed. This act is attempting to ban child brides in Malawi by “providing a legal framework” and “increasing the legal age to marry to 18” (Chapalapata, 2015).
Analysis:
Despite this relatively new act, it is said that it will take about three years to be enacted and will take a lot of work and enforcement for it to do its job. However, I feel this is a huge step for foreign countries and their beliefs on women and what they should and should not do. Women, young and old, should be encouraged to stand up for what they belief and be strong in what they do. I hope this act gets its recognition it deserves and the young women get the education and freedom they crave.

Blog #3: Malaria in Cambodia

Summary:

According to the World Health Organization 90 percent of annual deaths that occur in Africa are caused by Malaria. A disease that is carried by mosquitoes and infects human blood. This fact gives researchers from the current article perfect reason to fear Malaria’s growing resistance to the leading drug used to combat its deadly effect. The article refers to a study that was published recently in, The Lancet Infectious Diseases, a well-known medical journal.  The study found that malaria is rapidly growing resistant to artemisinin, the drug that is primarily prescribed to rid patients of the disease, in Cambodia. The study also found that this resistant strain is rapidly moving out of Cambodia toward India and Myanmar. This raises a major concern because new drugs for this disease are not likely within the near future. If this situation is not put under control the end results could potentially be devastating to the world at large. Especially in places such as Africa where the death tolls are already high due to the deadly disease.

Analysis:

The article states that Malaria has become resistant to drugs in the past which ultimately lead to the creation of artemisinin. The article mentions a statement from the authors or the study which says that, “The pace at which the geographical extent of artemisinin resistance is spreading is faster than the rate at which control and elimination measures are being developed and instituted, or new drugs being introduced,”. In addition the article states that there is no immediate replacement for the drug and that any possible substitute drugs are not likely within the next few years or decades. These statements are very shocking and it can make one wonder about the future of many of the people in Africa who are already being effected by malaria. As well as people all around the globe given the mode of transmission for this disease. I can’t help but wonder how the World Health Organization intends to get ahead of this situation and if the population will hear anything of the intentions that may come about.
