Whitney Everett/Youth Obesity on the Rise/9:04 pm/1/24/2008/post 2
The first blog I did was on obesity in Ireland for young adolescents. I thought this was interesting so i decided to look into this more. I found an article that talks about the obesity issue in Ireland for teenagers as well. The article talks about the teenagers in Ireland are on the rise with the increase in the obesity in young adults. They conducted a survey and found that obesity among Irish teenager is increasing but more so in boys. The survey says that 19% of teenage boys are overweight in comparison to 6% in 1990. In girls, it has risen from 15% to 17%. The article also says that 4 out of 5 teenagers are not getting enough fiber and are exceeding the fat intake that they should be taking in. It also mentions that teenagers that have overweight parents are more likely to be overweight also. The Food Safety Authority is not drawing up new guidelines for eating healthy and currently is working on the revision of the food pyramid.
In my first blog i talked about the huge increase in young adolescents as young as two having serious problems with their weight. Now come to find out its starting early and continuing on to the teen years. The problem is people are not eating the right way in Ireland. I'm sure there is the same food habits in Ireland as in the US, but with the increase of teenage boys becoming overweight this has become a problem that needs to be seriously looked at. If the percentage can go up that much in a matter of 10 + years think about what its going to be like in 20 more years if nothing is being done to help this problem. I'm a big believer in starting early when it comes down to intervention in a problem. If you let a problem keep growing without never addressing it, it will just get worse and be that much more hard to fix. I think its great that they are trying to set new guidelines for healthy eating and hopefully this survey will help with their plans to intervene in this problem with young adults in Ireland.

I feel that something needs to be done to prevent children from becoming obese. I work with children at my job at a child care center and anyone can tell that it is hard for a obesed child to do any simple activity such as walking up a couple of stairs but no one is the blame but the parents or whoever is taking care of the child. Good report!
I also think there is something that needs to be done to prevent children from becoming obese. If you think about though there is a similar situation going on in the U.S. Fast food restaurants are growing as well as many people are. Imagine how many people are going to look in about 20 yrs. if they keep eating like this. In some cases however, many kids can't help being obese because this could be some type of disease that they can't help prevent.
