A Hand That Links Germans and Turks
Since researching about different ethnic conflicts around the world, I have not heard about the war that is going on in Congo other than the numerous deaths that took place in Kenya. But this week I ran into something that caught my eye and no blood was shed. I was shocked because this article was in the Movies section of the newspaper but it represented cultural conflict. So I decided to take a break from the war, poverty, and hunger and see what other cultural conflicts are taking place in the world.
Imagine one day speaking to everyone beside you but no one can hear you but your family members. This is not happening to you because you really are not saying anything but it is because you can not be heard because your race/ethnicity. What has just been described to you is how Faith Akin of Hamberg, Germany feels. Akin is a German film director and he does great works but he does not get the credit that he deserves because the main focus is basically on his Turkish-German identity
But what changes his life forever is when his voice can finally be heard and he plays a role in the “The Edge of Heaven” which takes up the subject of cultural conflict for Turkish migrants that played to such powerful part of their lives for many decades. I am happy that his voice got heard and everyone gets a chance to honestly try and understand how he feels. Now he does not have to live with something like that on their shoulders.
