Chavez announces measures to combat food scarcity in Venezuela

ashley snyder/february 6, 2008/11:56pm/food scarcity/post 4

Hi, shifting my focus from Africa to Venezuela and Colombia, mainly because the food scarcity situation in Kenya and Zimbabwe is staying the same, except for the inflation in food prices.

So some background information: The presidents of Venezuela and Colombia have exchanged some nasty words about each other and this has effected trade and border relations between the two countries. This situation has come about due to the ongoinging problems of Colombian guerillas and threats of either country fearing the other is trying to become an "empire." Basically, they distrust each other a lot and for good reasons on both parts.

This entry was on Venezuela's president Hugo Chavez's plans to reduce food scarcity in his country which he says is caused by those who horde food and smuggle it to Colombia. The military is taking action and special units have been assembled to "combat" this problem.

Interesting note: Chavez accepts the blame for parts of the food shortages saying that the government is to blame for placing price controls on foodstuffs.

I honestly do not know much about this situation but hope to gather more information as I research it more, and hopefully from some of you guys with other topics as well.
