Death toll nears 800 in Kenya

Mark Moon / 10:40 PM (oops) / 2.1.08 / Ethnic Conflict #3

Kikuyu youths with clubs and machetes fought with police on the outskirts of Naivasha, Kenya on January 27. The violence stems from the recent December election of Kibaki, a Kikuyu whose win has been widely disputed. His opponent, Odinga is a member of the Luo people. Initially, the violence was directed towards Kikuyu people in various towns throughout Kenya. Now, the Kikuyu people are looking for revenge. One man said for every Kikuyu killed, three Luo would be killed.

The police in the area are overwhelmed with the situation. Lacking in number and logistics, they are unable to stop the rioting throughout Kenya. People are being burned alive in their homes, and the AU has yet to step in and help ease the situation. While ex-UN Sec. Gen. Kofi Annan is attempting to diffuse the situation between Odinga and Kibaki, violence continues to erupt throughout the nation. According to the report, this is the worst violence since the 1963 break from Britain. Somebody - be it the UN or the AU - needs to step in and mediate the situation before it erupts into an ethnic civil war.

I have been reading about this situation for a few weeks now and I feel so sad that so many people have been dying and it seems that nothing is been done about it just like the war in Congo. Not only are a few people dying but hundreds of people are. Hopefully, something can be done soon.

I agree, someone needs to step in and help the innocent people who are being killed. This is a horrible event going on in Kenya. Hopefully it will be over soon.
