Whitney Everett/Drug Prescriptions for Obesity/February 1, 2008/post 3
In 2006 there were about 1 million prescription drugs made for obesity in England. Most the prescription drugs were of two drugs: Sibutramine which controls feelings about food and Orlistat which prevents fat absorption in the intestine. The article says that almost a quarter of adults are obese and it is rapidly rising. Obesity in children has risen from 11% to 16% in 11 years. They believe these prescription drugs are going to help obese people to prevent them from heart disease or any other health related disease asscociated with being overweight. Some believe that these drugs should be payed by the individual and not the taxpayer. The prescription drugs are usually prescribed along with a healthier living program and change of diet.
But I believe these prescription drugs are providing a sense that people that are taking them are going to be instantly cured of obesity. I think that the people that need these drugs are going to think that as long as they take these prescription drugs its going to drop their weight. But in reality they do need to change their whole life cycle, how they eat, what they eat and the amount of physical activity that they do daily. Also, I would like to know how healthy are these drugs that they are prescribing and have they provided help in real life cases for people that are obese. Also, did these people just take the prescription drugs and lose weight or did they change their life cycle.

I agree with you - I think obesity is more about a lifestyle. Some may consider it to be genetic or a "sickness", but I think it's somewhat preventable. It's kind of weird that they're prescribing drugs for obesity... unless it's for people who are obese due to other disorders that cause it. That's like prescribing a "drug" for anyone else who's lifestyle has a bad effect on their health.
I also agree with you Whitney-Obesity is a Health Issue that many tend to ignore. Obesity is being more of a norm in recent years. Each individuals lifestyles should play a role in if they should be allowed to take this presciption drugs. Many have physical problems where this drug may indeed would be a great option. Others will definately need a lifestyle change.
