China fears grow over job losses

Protests are becoming more frequent in China due to unemployment. Businesses in China are closing because of the decrease in orders. This is causing the loss of many jobs for employees. Workers are being laid off because “some firms had closed down altogether and others had reduced production.” “Unemployment is expected to rise next year.” The expected unemployment rate for this year is the normal four point five percent and next year this percentage is predicted to increase. Employers are fearful that those who get laid off will protest; like the protests by the unemployed that are already so common in China. This week protesters attacked “government buildings, damaged buildings, and injured police officers.” The attack occurred in China’s western Gansu province in the city of Longnan. The government is worried that if the growth of the economy can not remain constant and keeps falling, then their power will soon decrease. This economic crisis is greatly affecting China, in that the loss of jobs leads to more protests and will eventually cause the foundation of the government to fall apart. I feel that there is not really much that can be done in order to stop the rapid loss of production and the effect that this has on the increase of unemployment. The only way to make sure China, and the rest of the world, does not completely fall economically would be to try to keep consumption and production up at a constant rate. The economic crisis that’s occurring now is a large global issue; hopefully something can be done in order to fix this problem soon.
