The United Nations Development Programme has earmarked N$80 million worth of funds for gender development programmes in Namibia. These funds will concentrate on the women from more rural areas. This fund is connected to the Spanish government and aims to increase awareness of women’s rights in the area. The article goes on to say that women are more affected by conditions of poverty than men. This programme follows the trend of many developing nations to put gender development as a top priority.

Personally, I’m even less convinced now than I was when the semester started that such programs are of any help. The plans they tried to claim were concrete seem so vague and simple that I really wonder why the issues haven’t been resolved yet if it’s really as simple as they make it seem. That isn’t to say that I don’t want such programs to work- I really do hope that such things are effective in making things better for the women in Namibia. I just don’t know how this program will manage that. Additionally, I’m curious- what is Spain’s tie to Namibia? The article mentions that this was part of a Millennium Goals fund. Are other nations doing such things, or is it just Spain?
