Nigerian gunman seize oil vessel and hold crew hostage

Over the weekend gunman captured an oil firm vessel and its crew off the shores of Nigeria. Several men were said to be aboard but their nationalities were not known until later. The ship was on its way from Singapore to Warri seaport. Negotiations were underway between the vessels owners and relevant government agencies so that they could release the vessel and the crew members. Officials are saying that the hijacking may be because of the arrest that was made on Saturday by the military of 22 Filipinos. The Filipinos were said to have 12,500 metric tonnes of crude in their possession and they think they had been stolen. The hijacking was the way they reacted because they must be very upset on what happened to these 22 men. Since Nigeria is one of Africa’s top oil producers, many gangs and other people and other criminals are tapping into these pipelines to receive oil. Since oil pipelines and oil facilities are being targeted because of the demand, I think there needs to be more security in place to help catch these criminals.
I think this very ridiculous and I can’t believe these people really did this. This situation makes it more clear that were not safe anywhere. I think it’s very unfortunate that this happened to these men, especially since there weren’t harming anyone. I don’t feel sorry for the 22 Filipinos that were arrested because what they did was wrong and they needed to be punished.
