The day after Thanksgiving is traditionally the first shopping day of
Christmas. Stores cater to consumers by offering outrageous deals and
opening extra early in the morning, luring armies of shoppers all day long.
It has become known as Black Friday as this is the day that retailers are
in the black (turn a profit). It is a day fraught with clogged roadways
and shopping aisles, high tempers and blatant over consumption.

What would happen if you bought nothing that day?

In solidarity with the notion of Buy Nothing Day, first launched by
Adbusters Magazine, The Hive offers consumers a smart alternative: The
Really Really Free Market. As resources, both economic and natural, are
dwindling, now is the time for each of us to commit to a radically
different way of doing things. Like not shopping for Christmas presents.

Instead of going further into debt at the shopping mall, come to The Hive
for the Really Really Free Market!

Here's how it works: Bring stuff you don't want or need. Leave it for
others to take. Then look through all the stuff that other people have
brought. It's like a yard sale, only FREE! Books, clothing, kitchenware,
electronics, art supplies: you will find these and many more for FREE!

As well as loads of free stuff, there will be gift-making demonstrations,
free musical performances and free food.

Avoid the crowds and credit card debt. Consider buying nothing at the
Really Really Free Market!

Taken from the Adbusters web site (http://www.adbusters.org/campaigns/bnd):

Suddenly, we ran out of money and, to avoid collapse, we quickly pumped
liquidity back into the system. But behind our financial crisis a much more
ominous crisis looms: we are running out of nature… fish, forests, fresh
water, minerals, soil. What are we going to do when supplies of these vital
resources run low?
There’s only one way to avoid the collapse of this human experiment of ours
on Planet Earth: we have to consume less.
It will take a massive mindshift. You can start the ball rolling by buying
nothing on November 28th. Then celebrate Christmas differently this year,
and make a New Year’s resolution to change your lifestyle in 2009.
It’s now or never!
