During his campaign, Obama proposed a plan that could create 5 million "green collar" jobs in environmental industries. A new report from Duke University supports this cleam, saying that "green collar" jobs present the next frontier for US manufacturing. Duke university researchers say there is a direct link between low-carbon technologies and increase in jobs, and the US has potential to grow in a low-carbon economy. Their report called "Manufacturing Climate Solutions" takes a hard look at the different types of jobs that could be created if US chose to engage in the fight against global warming. This report gives tangible evidence for the first time of jobs that could be created, and names them. Jobs could be created from sustainable industries such as LED lighting, high-performance windows, auxiliary power units for long-haul trucks, concentrating solar power, and Super Soil Systems (new method for treating hog waste). The report includes a detailed break down of the supply chains and maps highlighting the location of companies with most potential for green jobs in several states. Many scientists and researchers now think that this is what is really going to turn the US economy around; that companies will start to thrive off of their new technologies and create more jobs with them.
I think this is the best news yet! What could be better than combining two major problems that the US is facing and turning them into one major success together? Also, I think the workers at these "green" companies will actually be able to take some pride in their work since they are helping the earth, rather than going through the motions and following a boss's command becuase they have to.
