On Friday in Mogadishu, Somalia, one of the fiercest battles to date occurred between Somali security forces and Islamic insurgents in which seventeen people were killed and at least six people wounded. It was a two-hour battle that began at the house of a local government official. A witness reported seeing fifteen bodies of young men, not identified as insurgents or civilians lying in the street. There were also eight soldiers killed. The overturning of the government began in 1991 when the dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was turned over by warlords; therefore, there hasn’t been a functioning government. The insurgents and attacks have driven away more than half of Mogadishu’s 2 million civilians and killed thousands of people. The insurgents have gradually taken control of more territory within southern Somalia.

The insurgents within Somalia have continued to kill innocent people as well as caused the displacement of many civilians. It’s unfortunate that these Islamists insurgents feel so strongly about their ideals that they would completely wipeout a country with violence and terror. These attacks have been increasing over a span of about two years. Hopefully, there is a peace agreement in the very near future. If there is not an agreement then more people will continue to die. Somali and Ethiopian troops were able to rescue some of the capital of Mogadishu in 2006 but the attacks have continued to escalate.

this is really depressing. It is hard to say if there will be a peace agreement, and I actually have to say I doubt it. It is very hard to sway people that believe so strongly in something that they would kill for it.
