U.N.: Angolan troops join fighting in Congo

News in Gomo, Congo today is saying that Angolans troops are now joining the fight to end the violence that stemmed from Rwanda’s genocide, and has moved into Congo’s borders. The need for increased protection of the Congolese people has become apparent in recent months; because it seems that the violence is not stopping. Official are worried that if the conflict is not stopped it could be a problem that could spread throughout the sub-region. The U.N. has been a target for rebels trying to stop any kind of peacemaking from happening in Congo. This October, Congo felt the need to ask the city of Angola for both military and political help in trying to stop Tutsi rebels led by Laurent Nkunda, who were trying to advance in their “ethnic cleansing” toward Gomo. Angola’s help in this conflict could prove to hurt more than it helps. Tutsi rebels view Angolans as threat, and are said to be associated with Congolese rebels. Many innocent civilians are being killed because of the conflict between the feuding rebels.
It is sad that still after all of these years, there is still conflict deriving from the genocide in Rwanda. I’m glad that the U.N. is trying to do something to help stop this conflict from happening. If someone doesn’t do something about this problem, it will continue to spread, and more lives will continue to be lost. Congo’s neighboring cities need to be working together to try to end the violence that continues to cause problems.
