This article states that the United Nations has withdrawn its support for the Congolese army units operating in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This is because the UN has discovered that as many as 500 civilians have been killed by the Congo’s army since March. UN peacekeepers have been providing significant support for the army until now. The UN has decided to suspend any support for the army units involved in these killings. It is stated that at least 62 civilians, mostly women and children, have been killed between May and September. A number of them were raped as well.
I believe that the UN is making the right decision by withdrawing support after these horrendous crimes have been committed. I do not think that any army who behaves in this manner deserves any help. If they want the UN back they should start thinking about these crimes before they commit them. The idea of soldiers raping and killing innocent civilians makes me sick to my stomach. I do not think that an army of this kind deserves any support. It says that that UN peacekeepers have been keeping them strong and healthy by sending them food, fuel, and medical care, which makes me sad because they were getting all these perks that the civilians don’t have and the soldiers were the ones who were hurting people.
