As the Cholera outbreak in Haiti continues, it has claimed over one-hundred lives so far. As of right now the outbreak has been located mostly in camp areas far enough outside cities in rural areas. Since the earthquake back in January, many Haitians are living in these camps. The largest concern is that this outbreak will occur in Port Au Prince, which is the capital of Haiti. In Port Au Prince much of the area is populated with camps of those that survived the earthquake. As of today aid workers are trying their best to be sure that no one leaves the camps from these rural areas. Cholera thrives in poor sanitation, Haiti has seen this disease for a vast amount of time. This makes it more difficult to prevent seeing that at anytime, anywhere in Haiti it can occur and cause an outbreak.

As discussed in class, whose responsibility is it to be sure that disease is prevented in a country that cannot afford to take care of itself. Aid workers understand this and they are trying their best to be sure that Haitians are safe from illeness. Although this is also a social problem because it can be fixed if we helped educate them on sanitation and how disease are spread. It is just as important to have aid workers helping these people as well as aid educators, who can discuss how and why diseases spread and how to prevent future occurances.

I agree, Emily. I did a post on Cholera in Haiti, also. I'm saddened over the situation that the country has to face. First, the earthquake, now this. Much needs to be done for the Haitians, and fortunately, much CAN be done. With enough financial support from people like you and me, Haiti can benefit from it.

People can help finance the reconstruction and cleaning of the country. We can put in on providing food and water for Haiti. It's a solution we be part of, graciously.

I agree with you both and I as well did a post on Cholera in Haiti. Cholera sounds like an awful disease and I could not imagine what the people in Haiti must be going through. I know that this problem can be fixed, but like you said the people must be educated and told how to stop the spread of disease. I believe once conditions get better, the spread of Cholera will soon slow down.

I agree with everyone on this issue, there are only so many things that we can do in a situation like this. But we can offer our support and aid to the people that are being effected by this disease, even without traveling to Haiti for direct aid.
