Blog #2 Food Poisoning Cases hits China's Schools

In Beijing there were about 300 primary and middle school Chinese students that have gotten sick from unsafe water or food given to them by their schools. This has happened five different times in a weeks’ time. The latest occurrence in Shandong affected 86 primary students that got sick right after they ate lunch. The food poisoning was more serious for some because they had to stay in the hospital under observation. Higher authorities were sent out to examine the school’s food for problems that could have caused the children to get sick. The official Xinhua News Agency said there were four more cases that accounted for 205 children in Hebei and Jiangxi. It was stated that China’s food safety record had been abused by the extensive use of poor quality additives by corrupt food producers. This along with accidental contamination due to low hygiene standards could have also led to food poisoning. In 2008 six children died and 300,000 got sick from chemicals that were added to the milk.

Too many children have either gotten sick or died from food poisoning in China. There should be some standards and a guideline that must be followed everyday to ensure all the food and water is safe for the children to drink. The food seems to only be checked when someone gets sick when it should be done often to keep the children healthy. Every food producer should not be accepted to bring food for the school. Because there are corrupt producers and producers that just may not be knowledgeable about the standards. Their products should be inspected thoroughly before being able to serve their food to the students. The article stated that there were weak quality control regulators. A higher authority is clearly needed to set some standards and make sure the regulators are doing their job to ensure food and water are safe.
