Police in Puerto Rico Are Accused of Abuses in Justice Dept. Report
The Puerto Rican Police Department has been placed under investigation due to extreme violations of civil rights. Government officials made it known publicly this past Thursday that the Puerto Rican police department has been using unnecessarily deadly force. They are continuing to harm large sums of people including innocent ones also. Over 17,000 different offenses have occurred in recent years including illegal searches and seizures, and violent attacks. Research shows that more officers are involved in criminal activity than any other major law enforcement agency in the country. The investigation of the Puerto Rico police department began in July 2008 and problems still are occurring. More than 1,709 arrest have been made from minor assaults to murder. This is very hard to take into account because the police department has made a large amount of the arrests for crimes they may or may have not been involved in. In October, the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested 61 officers from the department in the largest police-corruption operation in bureau history. We look for police departments to help save and protect us and in this case they are the ones causing the harm. The government has a responsibility to further investigate the P.R.P.D because if they don’t, more unauthorized force may continue to be used. The goal of the government is to protect our civil rights that are guaranteed to us under the First Amendment of the Constitution. Law enforcement officers of Puerto Rico have been known to discriminate against people of Dominican descent. In 2011, there have been 786 homicides which is 117 more homicides that have occurred than last year. The P.R.P.D should be watched closely over the next couple of months to make sure that no more excessive force is used, and no more illegal searches and seizures without probable cause.
