Barrick Receives Record of Decision on Cortez Hills

The Barrick Gold Corporation has been approved for a project in Nevada. The ROD or Record of Decision for the Cortez Hills project became effective on Wednesday November 12th, 2008. The purpose of the Cortez Hills project is to “create new economic development and job opportunities in rural Nevada.”, as stated by the President of Barrick’s North America area. It has been predicted that during the first five years production will increase the amount of gold to be “about 1.0 million ounces of gold” every year. The area that will be hosting the project is the Western Shoshone communities. The Shoshone communities are a tribe of Native Americans. There is an agreement between the Shoshone communities and the Barrick Corporation that allows them to work together in order to reach their goals. The main goals are to improve many opportunities such as education and employment; to make the “Native culture” known to the public and increase its understanding. “Barrick is the first company to do this in Nevada”. I feel that the Cortez Hills project is a great opportunity for many people. The Barrick Gold Corporation has given future generations of the Shoshone communities a chance for education. This shows that the Barrick Corporation is legitimate and serious about what they are doing. This should eventually help out the economy, especially in the crisis we are going through now. Creating job opportunities will help decrease unemployment and increase production. This will allow more people to have money, therefore increasing demand which will help the economy get back on the right track.
